Shipyard capabilities and capacity

I have extensive experience of capabilities and capacity analysis, first within a small team that generated shipbuilding/repair capabilities assessment systems from scratch and applied them to mid-tier US shipyards. I have then developed and populated capacity analysis models for all shipyard designs and financial modelling projects since.

Other relevant projects include:

  • Strategic advice and analysis on Naval surface shipbuilding and sustainment for Major Western Government, 2023

  • Commercial shipyard development plan, UK, 2022/23

  • Submarine programme capacity and productivity assessment for Major Western Government, 2019/20

  • Capabilities and capacity analyses for naval surface ships and submarine construction for Defence Materiel Organisation, Australia, 2012 (findings published in the Government’s Future Submarine Industry Skills Plan, supporting the 2013 Defence White Paper)

  • Production engineering and facilities design support for major US shipbuilding yard, 2006

Other experience in this area includes all of the capacity estimating for shipyard concept, functional and detail designs for numerous projects over a twenty-year period, including:

  • Long-series manufacture of patrol boats/leisure craft/workboats, Malaysia, 2025

  • Concept design and options for major Defence precinct, Australasia, 2024

  • Superyacht and leisure craft construction facility, Arab Gulf States, 2020/22

  • Superyacht ship repair yard design review, Australasian Government, 2020

  • Submarine construction facilities assessment, Major Western Government, 2020

  • Government dockyard long-range facilities plan, Asia/Far East, 2019/23

  • Greenfield site Naval Dockyard, Asian Navy/Government, 2017/20

  • Assess proposed submarine construction facilities, Western Government, 2017/18

  • Naval shipbuilding yard for Western Government, 2016/17

  • Production of series/semi-custom composite motor yachts, Arab Gulf States, 2014/15

  • Ship repair yard, Arab Gulf States, 2007/08

  • 'Blank canvas' future state-of-the-art Naval construction facilities, UK, 2005

  • Design options for large ship repair yard, Gulf Arab States, 2004/06

  • Long-range facilities plan for major US shipbuilding yard, 2005

This led to my development and population of a 30-year, UK-wide, dynamic capacity model for the UK Government in 2022/23, covering facilities and workforce capacity/utilisation for multiple sectors.
